Girls Night Out 2/22

By Michele

Here's a list of the girls in the running:

CONTESTANTAGEHOME TOWN
Aloha Mischeaux18St. Louis, MO
Amanda Avila23Rowland Heights, CA
Carrie Underwood21Checotah, OK
Celena Rae29Fort Worth, TX
Janay Castine17East Palo Alto, CA
Jessica Sierra19Tampa, FL
Lindsey Cardinale19Ponchatoula, LA
Melinda Lira19Hanford, CA
Mikalah Gordon17Las Vegas, NV
Nadia Turner28Miami, FL
Sarah Mather22Charlotte, NC
Vonzell Solomon20Fort Myers, FL

We're ready to roll.

Paula is sans arm thing tonight.

First up: Vonzell Solomon. I think the girls will go less for the ballady type songs that the guys did last night.

Vonzell is...ok. Wow, that smile is forced. Good choice of songs to show off where she can belt.

---

Man, I hate Randy Jackson more each season.

Faith, in the comments: Are we having a pool on how many Whiteny songs are 1) sing and 2) butchered?

Whitney and/or Aretha. I'm waiting for it.
----

Amanda Avila - She looks like Jamie Gertz. That shirt is HIDEOUS.

She's stiff, looks uncomfortable, and (and my sentence somehow got truncated here and I don't remember what it was).

---

Janay Castine up now.

Another shaky one. She sounds nervous as hell.

She's recovering, but I think she blew it.
---

Wow. I think Simon smoked some of Paula's crack tonight.

--

Carrie Underwood - Robyn's favorite - is up.

She seems the most relaxed so far tonight. I'm not really feeling the song choice. Not feeling it at all. Not saying she's bad, because she's really good - I just think she has better in her. (I did pick her as one of my finalists and said she's a star in the making)
----
Sarah Mather up. Ok, I do not like her to begin with so anything I say will be biased. But listen to her. She SUCKS! No oomph to her voice, no power. It's horrible. She seems like she's concentrating too hard on looking good instead of sounding good.
---

Melinda Lira up. That is one frumpy outfit.

I'm diggin' her, dawg.

Err...I mean...I like her voice. Good job. Not outstanding, but good.
---
Nadia Turner up. One of my favorites.

Oh yea. She's daring. She's talented. She's got the presence and I love her non cookie-cutter voice. It's roughter than the rest of the girls' voices and that's what makes me like it. She's no Celine. And that's a good thing. She's what Constantine wishes he was.
---

Celena Rae up. She's all over the place. Bad song choice. This is a girl who should have went for a power ballad and didn't. She's not horrible, but there's nothing about her that sets her apart from anyone else.

I should be on this show. The judges are just repeating everything I say here - first. I am your EXPERT! Oh, how sad.

-

Oh my gosh, Mikalah, you sound like The Nanny doing karoake.

And to think, I finally came around to liking her last week. I thought this performace was god awful and these people are going to LOVE it. GOOFINESS DOESN'T SELL RECORDS, PAULA!

---
Lindsey Cardinale up.

What is it with the baby doll pajama tops? And was she just holding her boob? No? Ok, sorry.

Terrible. Shaky voice, too low, no power, no emotion. She's pretty and she can sing, but either this song choice was bad or she's really nervous.
--

Turns out the girls are just as spineless as the guys. Won't anyone do something...different??

And I changed my mind about Mikalah. To quote another horrible girl singer, Avril Lavigne, "I want to kick her in the box and shove her."

Was that rude? Probably.
-----
That Burger King commercial with Hootie makes me want to stick forks in my eyes and screwdrivers in my ears.

--
Jessica Sierra up. Oh jebus. It's Phil Collins. I'm sorry, I cannot judge her with an open mind now.

I think I've seen total strangers sing this in their car better than she's pulling this off. She can do better.

-

Last but not least, Aloha Mischeaux.

Oh look. A baby doll dress! No. No. No. This is AWFUL.

If this thing was judge right now, down to the top five, there would be ONE GIRL in the whole thing.

That was really...hookerish. I think she's better than most that sang tonight, but there was something about it...

Apparently, I'm in the minority on this one.
---

And that's it for tonight. Tomorrow, four people go home. Care to make your picks on who's going to pack up?

Are we having a pool on how many Whiteny songs are 1) sing and 2) butchered?

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:00 PM

You could have at least corrected my spelling. ;)

Amanda really sucked it up with that crappy song.

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:07 PM

Amanda is off pitch on almost every syllable. Yuck.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:07 PM

Wow, sexually harassment on national TV. Shame on Simon!

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:08 PM

Janay is totally freaked out - it's not only obvious in her posture, but it's hurting her voice.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:13 PM

Excellent vocals by Carrie. I like her.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:16 PM

Carrie, bad song choice really. Does she remind anyone else of Kelly?

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:17 PM

Yay Carrie! I loved that song . . . in high school . . . too many years ago to mention. (ahem).

Posted by: Jeannine at February 22, 2005 08:19 PM

No apologies Michele, Sarah was 100% awful. No pitch, no power, no nothing.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:24 PM

someone jealous of others looks?

Posted by: k at February 22, 2005 08:24 PM

Oh no, Celine. This can't be good.

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:25 PM

Wow. And I thought I hated it when Celine sang Celine's songs.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:26 PM

K, try reading for comprehension, honey. It keeps you from looking like an ass.

Posted by: michele at February 22, 2005 08:27 PM

I can't help but laugh at Melinda's gestures. It looks like she's trying to shoo away flies.

Posted by: Leslie at February 22, 2005 08:29 PM

I hate Celine Dion - that song is an Idol staple. I think i'm going to judge the quality of singing by if they manage to set off both "key finders" in this house at once.
:-)

Posted by: Angel at February 22, 2005 08:29 PM

God, I love Nadia.

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:33 PM

I think Nadia is moving some of my power... and I like it lots.

Posted by: Leslie at February 22, 2005 08:33 PM

Nadia is the female Mario. The vocals aren't spectacular, but her performance totally sells it.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:33 PM

OMG Celena sucks.

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:36 PM

Celena's song sure sucked. But she's hot.

Posted by: JohnO at February 22, 2005 08:36 PM

Ugh. Keyfinders are not such a good idea. Celena set them off four times. I guess they didnt like her. Looks like I have to get them out of this room.

Posted by: Angel at February 22, 2005 08:37 PM

Pardon me if this is a noob question, but are there restrictions on what songs are available to be sung, say due to royalties? I'd love to see someone belt out a Todd Rundgren song.

Posted by: JohnO at February 22, 2005 08:41 PM

We're behind right now on TiVo...just got through C.U.'s performance. I was really shocked she picked Tiffany. And I think Todd was even more shocked I named that tune. ;-) Totally agree with your review of her though.

Posted by: robyn at February 22, 2005 08:41 PM

Yea, like any of those people know who Todd Rundgren is.

Posted by: michele at February 22, 2005 08:42 PM

Ugh. This chick sounds like an out of breath Bette Midler.

Posted by: JohnO at February 22, 2005 08:44 PM

ROFL Michele! Nanny/karaoke. Way too damn rehearsed. And not good. What's Randy saying?!

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:44 PM

Thank god for Simon. Mikalah is annoying as all get out.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:45 PM

Why does Lindsey keep grabbing her boob?

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:46 PM

Whats up with the contestants names? Do they pick people with out-there names on purpose? Like one-upping the name Fantasia or something? Its not like a name like that gives you charisma or anything.

Posted by: Angel at February 22, 2005 08:51 PM

Jessica is massacreing a song I like a lot.

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 08:53 PM

Aloha's sounding very Aretha. I like it.

Posted by: Faith at February 22, 2005 08:56 PM

I think Aloha sang ok, but I wasn't feeling her performance overall - she was trying for "fun" and ended up at "vaguely sleazy".

Posted by: Ian S. at February 22, 2005 09:01 PM

You mean, that really *is* Hootie in that Burger King commercial?! Darius, dude, you're a sell out...

Posted by: denise at February 22, 2005 09:18 PM

The top three (in my humble opinion) in the running for going home are Mikalah, Sarah and Amanda. Janay better snap out of it because she's on her way out also.

Posted by: alln at February 23, 2005 05:45 AM

i liked carrie's and nadia's performance. i was actually digging the tiffany song (and not just because of the name)- i used to love that tape back in the day. that was my high school flashback. and jeez, aloha surprised the shit out of me.

is it weird that ended up voting for the exact same numbers as last night? mikalah got my sympathy vote because i truly think she's got something better in her......she gets one more shot, but that's it.

Posted by: tiffany at February 23, 2005 09:07 AM

I think Lindsey did grab her boob. I blushed really hard for her. It looked accidental.

The comment about setting off both "key finders" in the house totally made me laugh, and I don't even know what they are.

Posted by: Tanya at February 23, 2005 10:29 AM

I ended up going for Nadia...I think she really kicked ass tonight, completely blew everyone else away. Not sure which of the guys I'd like to see her go up against, but this should be interesting.

Though I think the talent this year is sparse. And the personalities are dull, as is represented by the songs they chose.

And is it just me, or are most of them way off key?

Posted by: kat at February 23, 2005 01:26 PM

Aloha means good bye. Say goodbye to the cheap Beyonce wannabe. That act has been played out. There were some bad performances, but Aloha wouldn't cut it at a local fair. Worst performance of the week, by far.

Posted by: Rob at February 26, 2005 02:02 PM

Ok Nadias performance blew me away and i love that song, that she did and i have never heard it before who originally sang it? I am on the verge of killing my computer i really want to know who originally sang it and whats it called please e-mail me
amy1171@hotmail.com
*(please call the e-mail nadia so i can recognize it) Thanks

Posted by: amy at March 1, 2005 12:15 PM

Desperate enough to kill her computer, but not yet desperate enough to check Nadia's profile at idolonfox.com - I think her computer's better off dead.

Posted by: Tanya at March 1, 2005 03:38 PM

Mikalah not only sounds like the nanny, she LOOKS like her. Seriously people, stop voting for her, let's get her out now before she ends up one of the top 3 and so much better talent has gone out the door.
